Breaking Barriers & Elevating our Voices: The All-Latina C-Suite Leading Latino Media Network

Last year, the Latino Media Network emerged as a pioneering force in the media landscape, notable not only for its broad reach across significant Latino markets but also for its historic all-Latina executive suite.

The Latino Media Network was founded with a clear mission to empower and represent Latino voices across the media spectrum. Latina Activists and entrepreneurs, Stephanie Valencia and Jessica Morales Rocketto as co-founders envisioned a network that could serve as a platform for authentic Latino narratives, reflecting the community's diverse experiences and perspectives.

Valencia, previously served as a special assistant to former President Obama and the White House's principal deputy director of public engagement. While Morales Rocketto has extensive experience with campaigns, including Hillary for America, the DNC, and Obama for America.

To achieve this mission, Valencia and Morales Rocketto raised a historic $80 million to acquire a number of radio stations and grow their joint impact. Beyond this incredible accomplishment, they took it a step further by enlisting Sylvia Banderas Coffinet and Rose-Anne Tifre, to join their leadership team, thereby completing the formation of the industry's first all-Latina C-suite.

Banderas Coffinet, who took on the CEO role in May 2023, has a robust background in media and publishing with leading roles at notable Hispanic publications such as Latina, People en Español, and Hola! USA. Her personal and professional missions align closely with the Latino Media Network’s goals—addressing the historical underrepresentation of Latinos in mainstream media and fostering a media environment that honors genuine Latino stories.

Rose-Anne Tifre, who joined as Chief Revenue Officer, brings a wealth of experience from her tenure at SiriusXM and a personal dedication to the network’s cause. Her role at The Latino Media Network extends beyond business development; it is about ensuring that the voices of the Latino community are represented in a manner that truly reflects our diversity and richness.

The Latino Media Network’s strategic focus centers on crafting content that engages and empowers the Latino community by celebrating its culture, language, and stories–fostering a strong sense of pride and identity.

The network's all-Latina C-Suite embodies this vision, deeply connected to their cultural roots and dedicated to producing media that resonates authentically with Latinos. This groundbreaking leadership team not only challenges industry norms but also sets new standards, inspiring future Latino generations to pursue leadership roles and see themselves reflected across all levels of media and corporate America, thus reshaping the narrative for Latinos nationwide.

Young Miko Unveils 'att.': A Debut Album Decoding Her Journey

If you’re been reading Minority Majority for some time (or know me personally), you know I’m a big Young Miko fan–so you can imagine my excitement when she dropped her first album. Released on April 5th, Young Miko’s debut album "att." is a vibrant encapsulation of her life experiences, merging her childhood memories with her current reality in a distinctly personal narrative.

The album opens with “rookie of the year,” where a recording of Miko’s father nostalgically underscores her lyrical journey from past to present. This track sets the tone for an album that blends vulnerability with defiance, exploring themes from personal triumphs to intimate heartbreaks.

Throughout "att.," Miko navigates a spectrum of emotions, balancing playful flirtation with introspective verses. Tracks like “Fuck TMZ” and “Princess Peach” showcase her range, combining personal anecdotes with broader, relatable themes. “Fuck TMZ” criticizes superficial media culture with a mix of singing and rap, drawing on 90s influences to create a track that's both critical and catchy. Meanwhile, “Princess Peach” delves into the complexities of romantic relationships through engaging, melodic hooks.

A standout moment is the queer anthem “MADRE,” featuring Villano Antillano, which highlights Miko's unapologetic expression of her queer identity. This collaboration is emblematic of the album's intent to not only entertain but also empower and represent underheard voices within the music industry.

Miko's approach to the album was intentional, aiming to create a cohesive work rather than a collection of singles. This artistic integrity shines through in her selection of collaborators, Villano Antillano, Feid and Jowell y Randy and the thematic continuity across the tracks. Her focus on authenticity over star-studded features speaks to her commitment to genuine storytelling and connection with her audience.

Breaking the Ice: How the NHL is Engaging Latino Communities

The NHL is making a concerted effort to expand its fan base into the Latino community, a demographic traditionally underrepresented in hockey audiences. Recognizing the potential to expand its audience, the NHL has launched several programs designed to make hockey more accessible and appealing to Latino communities across the United States.

Despite a strong inclination towards sports, with 94% of Hispanic males identifying as fans, only a small fraction follows hockey. To address this, the NHL has strategically positioned initiatives in states with significant Latino populations. These include offering Spanish-language broadcasts and hockey education programs, and even considering games in Mexico City to kindle interest and foster inclusivity.

The league's efforts extend beyond mere viewership; it aims to integrate hockey into the cultural fabric of Latino communities. Celebratory events like Hispanic Heritage Month and culturally themed game nights are tailored to engage Latino families, making hockey a part of their social and cultural gatherings. This approach is designed not only to increase ticket sales but to cultivate a lifelong passion for the sport.

Auston Matthews, a prominent NHL player with Mexican roots, exemplifies the potential impact of this outreach. Matthews, who has risen to prominence in the league, serves as a powerful symbol of success, showing young Latino fans that there is a place for them in the sport. His presence and achievements play a crucial role in the NHL's narrative to diversify its fan base and player roster.

Teams such as the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks have witnessed a substantial rise in Latino engagement, thanks to targeted community programs and bilingual educational initiatives. These efforts demonstrate the NHL's commitment to transforming hockey into a sport that resonates across cultural boundaries, inviting Latino families to experience the excitement of the game.

By broadening the sport’s appeal and making it more inclusive to Latinos, the NHL aims to secure a stronger, more diverse future for hockey.

How to Make: Mexican Street Tacos con Carne Asada

Mexican street tacos con carne asada are a beloved and flavorful staple, perfect for a casual gathering or a delicious family meal. Here's a simple recipe to bring this classic dish to your table:

Ingredients

For the Carne Asada:

  • 2 pounds flank or skirt steak

  • 1/2 cup fresh lime juice

  • 4 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

For the Tacos:

  • Corn tortillas

  • Chopped white onion

  • Chopped fresh cilantro

  • Lime wedges

  • Salsa (optional)

  • Guacamole (optional)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Steak:

    • In a bowl, mix the lime juice, garlic, cilantro, salt, pepper, cumin, chili powder, and oregano to create the marinade.

    • Place the steak in a resealable plastic bag and pour the marinade over it. Ensure the steak is well coated, then seal the bag and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to 4 hours for deeper flavor.

  2. Prepare the Toppings:

    • While the steak marinates, chop the onion and cilantro for the taco toppings and cut lime into wedges. Set aside.

  3. Cook the Steak:

    • Preheat a grill or skillet over high heat. Remove the steak from the marinade and grill it for about 3 to 5 minutes per side, depending on thickness, until it reaches your desired level of doneness.

    • Let the steak rest for about 5 minutes, then chop it into small, bite-sized pieces.

  4. Warm the Tortillas:

    • Heat the tortillas on the grill or in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds on each side until they are warm and slightly charred.

  5. Assemble the Tacos:

    • Place some chopped steak on each tortilla. Top with onions and cilantro, and squeeze a lime wedge over the top. Add salsa and guacamole if desired.

  6. Serve:

    • Serve your tacos immediately, accompanied by extra lime wedges on the side.
